# 1 - News: 2010 Nobel Physics Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov for the discovery of graphene

Description:

The two scientists at the University of Manchester who discovered graphene, Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010 for starting one of the hottest fields of research today. Bibliometric analysis of Thomson Reuters have hit this year with a full. My entry is based on the official announcement of the Nobel (Prize Announcement) Award. I've seen live (online) announcement, which included an interview with Geim very emotional (he sounded very excited about the award winner yet firm knew someday). Graphene is a film of a thickness atom carbon atoms arranged in a perfect atomic lattice. This form of graphene has exceptional properties that originate in the subtleties of quantum physics. Graphene (like the diamente) is a very hard material, but has only one atom thick, is a good conductor of electricity (better than copper), heat (the best driver in the known heat), is almost transparent ( see attached photo), but so dense that not even helium atom (the smallest gas atom) can pass through its holes (between carbon atoms).

Geim and Novoselov extracted the graphene from a piece of graphite (the same as found in any ordinary pencil). They used a kind of tape that allowed them to extract graphite sheet one carbon atom. Many scientists then believed it was impossible that a sheet of a single atom thick any material it was impossible to manufacture because it was unstable. Geim and Novoselov achieved the unexpected and thus became strong candidates for the Nobel Prize have now obtained.

Graphene has allowed physicists to study the properties of materials in only two dimensions. Many of these properties are due to phenomena of quantum physics without analogue in the world of material in three dimensions. Graphene applications are increasing every day, including the creation of new materials and manufacturing of innovative electronic products (such as graphene transistors) which could replace silicon and germanium in many applications. As is virtually transparent and a good conductor, graphene is suitable for producing transparent touch screens, displays for televisions and monitors, and even solar cells. Mixed with plastic graphene turns them into conductors of electricity, making them more resistant to heat and mechanical strength, which has allowed us to develop new thin materials superstrong, with good elastic and very light properties, with possible applications in satellites, planes and automobiles .

Konstantin Novoselov, 36, is British and Russian citizen, although born in Russia. Andre Geim, 51, is a Dutch citizen, but also born in Russia. Novoselov first worked with as a doctoral student Geim in the Netherlands. Later he followed the UK. Both studied physics career in Russia. Now are professors at the University of Manchester.
